When inspecting your dynamometer, an assigned person trained to National Standards should thoroughly inspect the load cell. Additionally, the person will examine some conditions listed below and determine whether they are hazardous. At the simplest level, load shackles are for load monitoring to prevent overload, which leads us to why using the right tool for the job is critical.
Removal Criteria of the Load Cell
If applicable, a load cell and its indicator must be removed from service if there is visible damage. It should also be returned to service when a qualified person approves it. So, the following criteria include:
- Missing or illegible manufacturers name/trademark, rated load identification, or serial number
- Signs of heat damage, such as arc strikes or weld splatter
- Excessive corrosion or pitting
- Also, load-bearing components that are cracked, broken, stretched, twisted, bent, or elongated
- In addition, excessive gouges or nicks
- Illegible readout or display
- Component hardware has damage
- There is unauthorized welding
- Other conditions, including visible damage that question the continued use of the load cell
