A dynamometer, or “dyno” for short, is a helpful device for measuring force, moment of force, or power. For example, the power that is produced by an engine, motor, or other rotating mover could be calculated by measuring both torque and rotational speed. A dynamometer could also be used to determine the torque and power to operate a driven machine like a pump. In this case, a motoring or driving dynamometer is actually used. A dynamometer that is designed to be driven is also known as absorption or a passive dynamometer. Read on to learn more about them!
Dynamometer Applications
In addition to being used to determine the torque or other power characteristics of a machine under test, dynamometers are used in a number of ways. In standard emissions testing cycles like those defined by the EPA, dynamometers are used to provide simulated road loading of either your engine or entire powertrain. In fact, beyond simple power and other torque measurements, dynamometers can be used as a part of a testbed for several engine development activities like the calibration of engine management controllers, which provide detailed investigations into combustion behavior and tribology.
Data Acquisition
An important component of a dynamometer is its data acquisition. The system is usually comprised of two units, which are connected by an Ethernet cable. The Commander, which is a computer that is operated by Windows-based software, issues commands to a Workstation, a touch-screen operated unit that is housed in any rugged industrial enclosure. The workstation operates the precision load and also the throttle control systems, collects data, and sends it to be processed, stored, and analyzed.
